Key Sustainability issues

Food security

Food security and undernutrition are persistent challenges even though the prevalence of undernutrition has decreased from 12% in 1999-2001 to 7% in 2010 – 2012.

Land rights

A lack of political will to safeguard Indigenous People and local communities' land rights has created a system with land ownership conflicts, almost 40% brazil's forest area is owned by local communities. Conflicts not only endanger the welfare of communities but also reduce the effectivity to safeguard ecosystems.

Biodiversity

Brazil is party to all the major international environmental treaties/conventions/protocols, a significant indicator of the country's sensitivity to biodiversity and conservation issues. More than 20 percent of Brazil is under protected area status, although it is unclear how much of these areas have formal and workable management plans.

Policies related to bioenergy

Since 1975 policies are aimed at substituting petroleum-based fuels with ethanol from sugarcane, since 2015 gasoline has to be blended with 27% ethanol. Use of biomass feedstocks for electricity or heat production is receiving increasingly more attention.
